PHYSICS AT THE LIMITS: A Separate Reality

This video is a *documentation of participants moving through the VR experience, and the wall projection displays what they see as they move through it.
It is remarkable that we and everything around us are made of particles that are not touching, and that particles constantly pass through our bodies. Thinking of the world from this perspective can shift feelings of empathy, morality, decision making, and one’s overall sense of reality. This immersive work isolates and extends that experience so that it can be contemplated more. The particle simulations in this work are derived from subatomic particle behavior (neutrinos) in cloud chambers at the CERN and TRIUMF physics labs, which contain a solution that reveals particle tracks as they pass through the chambers.
REM | TED2016 “Dream”

Large projection created for the TED2016 (Dream) evening event. Contemplating the movement through the stages of dreamspace creates an elevated multilayered state of consciousness: experiencing the dream, awareness of the dream, awareness of the awareness, and the waking sum. The layers allow the conscious and subconscious to touch, enabling us to nudge and guide the threading of dreams, influencing the subconscious, which then in stealth guides our intuition and future outcomes of the wakeful surface. REM courses through this transcendence from hypnagogic fragmentation to tense latent interlinking, which gets woven from turmoil into a transcendent release to carry back to wakefulness.
In search of meaning, the character navigates a paradoxical vacuum only to find that its exit is its own entrance and that there is no way out. A representation of philosophical, psychological, and theoretical paradox, and their analogous relationship to paradoxes and abstractions in the cosmos.

Monroe. Created with re-worked footage gathered in a collaborative silent film project facilitated by Shirin Neshat at University of Maryland, College Park (USA).
A venture into infinity where when one extreme is reached, it inevitably becomes its opposite; Forging a paradoxical reality where essentially, everything is everything, highlighting the possibility that nothing means anything and everything is meaningless. This can be thought of as the concept of the yin-yang in motion, or the nature of its resolve in action. The dissonance in this coding of reality is reflected in the visual and aural tearing, and its tension in the slow-burning but paced evolution. Video created with fractals, animated displacement and animated luminance key. Audio created by generating reverb and then using it as a source sound to process and work with.
Based on the theory of holography which allows physicists to translate descriptions of events in one dimension to the physics of a different dimension. Visiting the experience of trying to fathom what those translations might be like, and that of embracing that reality if it were in fact fundamental.

A delicate singularity lies between reaching self-awareness in a dream state, and how increased self-awareness causes dreams to recede or end. Dreamspace confronts this unstable surreal psycho-cosmic seesaw which if sustained, may be exploited as an elevated mode of consciousness.
A study of latent subconscious associations, and the nature of their rhythm, repetition and synchronization in rapid synaptic activity and building neuro-networks; also magnifying the idea of the brain as an electrochemical machine. Created with 100 individual digital paintings, re-composited procedurally (time-based). Sounds sampled live from atmosphere, machinery & trains in Spain and then processed.
A simulated transition into a state of nirvana segued by a transmission between the spine and brain favoring the intuitive hemisphere, breaking through the physical realm and circling into a connection with the cosmos which is interrupted just before fully reached as the purest state is arguably imperceivable. Created with object-driven fluid simulations and compositing. Dampened sound composites emphasizing extreme disconnect from the physical world.
A surreal portal into the psychological state experienced during infinite regress such as in discourse on the origin of the universe (i.e. the ontological, cosmological, and design proofs for the existence of God). To reflect the neutrality yielded, visual perception is distorted as the figures literally fall straight down but appear to be falling into the z-depth or spiraling downward (illusion created with animated fractal) or both. Aural understanding is halted by a processed/texturized Shepard tone (series of sine wave octaves creating the illusion of tones descending infinitely yet remaining constant). All physically impossible conditions that are perceived to be happening all at once and shifting back and forth, creating an overall infinite stasis in perception.
A simulated recalibration of the psyche to reach an unconditioned adaptable state of unclouded perception in which the purest and most accurate interpretation of reality can be achieved through the human brain and physicality. The subject is a life-sized dummy, void of identity in the neutral state. Video created by jerking the dummy in one hand while simultaneously adjusting a strobe light (placed between 5 offset facing mirrors) in realtime in the other hand. Unconventional compositing was used to create & visualize the scrambling and neutralization of information. Audio created by taking the final composite soundtracks from several other pieces and re-comping them together, as in many ways this piece is a thematic sum or galvanization of many of those concepts.
Documenting stream of consciousness, a heightened sense of reality, the inability to express and/or carry out ideas at the same speed at which they occur, and how raw subconscious content is affected when connecting to other peoples’ minds at various levels. Also isolating and coping with the nature of raw thought and finding meaning in the arbitrary. Script written by observing unfiltered thoughts (“watching the mind”) while sitting among the audience to absorb their psychological/subconscious influence and explore the effects of “proximity” suggested in behavioral science. The script was written moments before the performance to minimize the time for the brain to form biases and associations about the content as that would diminish the authenticity and rawness of the delivery. The video is a digital composite of footage from the actual live stage performance.

Highlighting the layers of illusion in our reality by recreating a CG version of the physical phenomenon in which an object in elliptical orbit casts a shadow as if its motion is linear. A modernized rendition of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.
