Common Phrasal Verbs
Here are some common phrasal verbs. I give short definitions & examples, but you should look them up. Keep in mind, native speakers often create phrasal verbs by saying “up” after a verb to add emphasis, drama, expression or interest.
TO BLOW OVER – To go away, to pass (usually a bad situation)
TO CREEP UP (ON) – To slowly emerge
TO DISH OUT – To give or distribute
TO FIX UP – To fix (with emphasis)
TO FREAK OUT – To suddenly become very angry or scared, to go crazy
TO FREAK OUT ON – To yell at or get mad at
TO FREEZE UP – To stop or hesitate because of fear or anxiety
TO HONE IN ON – to pinpoint or find something precise
TO HUSTLE UP – To do something faster, work harder or hurry up. Common in sports.
TO JACK UP – To increase an amount, to physically damage, beat up
TO JAZZ UP – To make better, enhance or make more exciting. Common with food.
TO JUMP OFF – To happen or start dramatically
TO JUMP ON (something) – To quickly start doing something, to do something aggressively
TO LINK UP – To meet a person or people
TO LOOK OUT (FOR) – to be careful or watch
TO MIX UP – to confuse or rearrange randomly
TO RAKE IN – to collect or accumulate
TO RUB DOWN – To massage
TO SAVE UP – To save money
TO SCREW UP – To make a mistake, to mess up
TO SETTLE IN – to become comfortable or get accustomed to
TO SIMMER DOWN – To calm down
TO SNIFF OUT – To look for something or try to figure something out
TO SYNC UP – To synchronize (with emphasis) or connect
TO TEAM UP – To join another person or other people to pursue a common goal
TO TWIST UP – To twist (with emphasis)
TO WRING OUT – To twist and/or squeeze liquid out of something (usually fabric)
TO ZONE OUT – to stop paying attention, to daydream, or to get lost in one’s own thoughts
